Day Of The Life In Construction - Music Soundtrack

Well Works ink logo with ink splatter and coffee stain

If our typical construction workday had a music soundtrack, I imagine the list would look something like this:

I have linked all of these to YouTube of the songs. I hope these liven your day or commute to and from work today.

*Disclaimer: I am not a pop-culture enthusiast and do not closely follow musical artists' political or religious preferences, criminal records, career trajectories, or whether they wore underwear when they went to the store last week. These songs were picked for the simple reason that their perceived words or messages resonated with certain times of the day I either experienced or observed within construction throughout my career. This post is not meant to be offensive in any way, shape, or form or have any underlying malintent. It is a well-intentioned post meant to uplift those working within our industry. While I tried to find the radio edits to share, some of these songs may include profanity. If you do not like a particular song, genre, or artist, use your power to choose and choose not to listen to it. Please use your power of self-control to post and share only positive comments. Allow those who could use it, the opportunity to enjoy it and help uplift, support, or encourage those within our industry.

Did you that music has health benefits?

It is a bummer we cannot typically listen to music on the job site for safety reasons, as I could see how this would be uplifting to the team. But below are some interesting facts about music's effect on humans:

  • "It is a surprisingly well-established fact that music can induce hormonal changes. These changes result in alterations of mood...when people hear their very favorite music, their bodies dump dopamine into a specific part of their brain" (Medina,2014, p.216).

  • "Music exerts a powerful effect on the brain through intellectual and emotional stimulation. It can also affect our body by altering our heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, pain threshold, and muscle movements" (Sousa, 2017, loc.8100)

  • "Researchers have known for a long time that music can directly influence blood pressure, pulse, and the electric activity of muscles. Newer evidence shows that music may even help build and strengthen connections between brain cells in the cortex" (Sousa, 2017, loc.8197).

  • "Researchers have also found that listening to background music enhances the efficiency of those working with their hands. However, one must exercise caution in selecting the type of background music. Overly stimulating music serves more as a distraction and interferes with cognitive performance" (Sousa, 2017, loc.8232).

Thanks to everyone for doing what you do every day out there on our construction projects. You got this! Enjoy!
