Book progress update: "Making Construction Fun Again" is making progress. While it is still exciting and challenging, it is much different from tackling our construction projects and is much more challenging than I expected.Â
Being a recovering project manager, I am used to, trained in, and comfortable with developing a plan, setting a schedule, and sticking with and carrying out said plan. I'm not so comfortable with extreme flexibility and the 'go where the wind takes you' approach, but I am finding that the process of writing a book requires this and, in a way, is similar to raising a child. You can have everything mapped out, planned out, and in order, including exactly what type of parent you will be, your child's future accomplishments, and who they will grow up to be. But the moment we put the finishing touches on that plan, we may as well crumple it up, use it to blow our nose, and flush it down a public toilet because it isn't at all how it will turn out.Â
I have a destination and, obviously, a starting point. The end destination is to provide a book to aid those in our industry who may have fallen out of love with construction and who may be a bit lost, burned out, or exhausted to help them rediscover their passion for the industry and improve their overall well-being. What I am finding, though, is that even with this destination point, the book seems to want to take its own path, at its own adventurous pace, to get there.Â
It's a ton of work. By this, I mean intentionally scheduled 6-hour chunks throughout the week dedicated to it. I'm finding that for every 10,000 words I write, only about 800 of them find their way into the actual book.Â
It is much more challenging than I expected and, at times, frustrating, but it is teaching me to enjoy the journey and process (ironically, similar to some suggestions I am incorporating in the book). It is fun and enlightening to talk with others and hear their perspectives, experiences, and suggestions.Â
With a little fortitude and persistence, I will keep on keepin' on and plan to have this resource published and available to the fantastic individuals of our industry sometime early next year.Â
Anyone else out there in the construction industry in the process of writing and publishing a book? Would love to hear how it's going...
